Blog Discussion - Go forth and discuss.

  1. This method of teaching that he is talking about, began in the industrial revolution. It was an era of reformation. Things were changing to suit efficiency. Training people to suit specified job fields, was the most efficient way to go. Today the world has tremendously diversified. Unfortunately we still view education with blinkers on.
Statistics show that India has the highest suicide rate in the world, marginally behind China.
    - 95 to 100 people commit suicide in India every day.
    - And of these a whopping 40% are in the adolescent age group.
    [Source: CNN-IBN Report, Jan 13 2010]
The motive when students kill themselves is invariably academic pressure - this accounts for 99 per cent suicides in the age group 12-18.
Ridiculous isn't it? What if that one child had a talent for singing? What if he wanted to become a singer instead of an engineer? Sadly society had written off his fate before he was born.
Why is it that we’re unable to mend these situations?
Reason being we’re so proud of the fact that our education system insists on “bringing out the best" in your child. Yes, education is important. But why is it the only thing that is given importance to? I remember as a child I was very interested in dancing. My father didn’t quite like the idea of me going to a dance class because according to him then, it held no importance. That didn’t stop me. I still go to dance class and I absolutely love it. Today we see so many dance shows on television wherein people are inspired to dance; inspired to pursue a career in dance.
Times have changed and people are slowly realizing the importance of arts and creativity. I believe everyone is creative in their own special way; only because everyone perceives the world differently.
The problem is that right from the time we’ve been 3 year olds, we’ve been reading story books that show the most prominent jobs in society. For example, Doctor, Engineer, Lawyer etc. However, singing, dancing, drawing has been viewed as “activities”. Basically we’ve been conditioned right from childhood that the former jobs are more reputed than the latter. Why so?
The education system today is focusing on what is being taught and not learnt.

It’s time we make the change!

  3. I wish every word of what he said could somehow be put in the heads of the people of the Ministry of Human Resource and Development in India to change the way our education system works

The creativity of children is amazing.
My younger brother found a much simpler way of solving a math problem. I kept telling him its the wrong way to do it, but then as i tried it two or three times more it was actually an easier way of doing it.
All of us are actually scared, we are scared that may be we are wrong, its really hard to go on and be confident when ten people around you are telling you that you are wrong. I think we must really think before telling anyone that they are wrong.

Loved the part in which he said that intelligence is diverse, dynamic & distinct.
We have quiet a narrow minded definition for the word.

  5. I totally agree with the cool witty funny guy!Sir Ken Robinson! Whatever he has mentioned is absolutely true and hes put it forward in a fun filled way but the fact is that it is we can say was a serious problem.Even in todays time there are parents out there who force their children to take up a subject like math or science because according to them itll make the childs life but what they fail to understand that if the kid is good at say in a type of art the superiority of math and science shouldnt crush his dreams of pursuing it.
the part that tells us 'Children are creative in the most amazing way because they have no fear of the fact that maybe wrong' is just spot on and true in every way as we grow up we are tuaght being wrong is like the worst possible thing so we block our minds and kill the creativity because we could be wrong.

Today the mindsets of people have changed quite considerably with dance shows and talent shows that give a boost to the people to pursue what they actually love doing and not just for the fact that you will get a degree, a job and live on pension. math and science are in fact important but even art and talent is of great importance. We have changed so much to say that today that at times parents are forcing their children into singing and dancing, for the fame and name, so it shouldnt turn out that arts become the new 'science'.
A child must be given an equal dose of both by the education system so he/she knows what is liked by him/her and what he/she is good at, so he can make his own choice, the correct choice!B)

  6. Well first of all to begin with i really hope this wasn't one long commercial by BMW to show how they're the only people who accept creativity..The answer to the question "do schools/our education systems kill creativity?" is hell yes. The problem begins with the fact that we are trained robots since birth.Like sir Robinson says a child is not afraid to explore because he/she is not aware of any consequences. If you touch a hot pan you get burnt but that doesn't mean everything you do for the first time will be something with a bad consequence. Our education system wants to breed a generation of people who think alike do the same things use the safest most tried and tested methods. The whole problem in the education system is that we begin the "literacy process" with the intention of learning so that we can improve ourselves and hopefully grow up to do what we dream of, but we are forced to go through the standard set of subjects whether or not we are interested in them. So many students many of whom may be commenting in this discussion have failed a subject or two not because they weren't good at it, but because they were better at something else. Our minds are brainwashed into thinking that if the masses haven't been able to earn their living and enjoy their lives by taking up a profession that they love neither can we. T-shirts that say" i was born free but education ruined me" seem funny to us but the point is on some level that is true. My school will vomit toppers and make me a capable of being a Nobel-prize winning micro-biologist but why must i learn biology when i honestly don't give a damn about it, but since society and my education dictates that I do what is my safest option and not what I find best I have to go with the prior. When we do things without worrying about the repercussions then we are free to truly express ourselves and only then are the pioneers born.

  7. Do you think the education you are receiving right now encourages 'creativity'?

If you could change your degree level education for the better, what would you change? How would you make BMM more 'Creativity-friendly'?

    ReplyDelete
  8. First of all I think that the whole theory system makes very little sense in mass media & We should also have a choice of subjects. New ideas should be welcome. Any time i have asked my teacher, not only in BMM but anywhere, the question, "so how will learning this book/chapter help us in our life." I just get to hear something like well you will pass the year/ its a part of the syllabus you don't have a choice but to do it. So why don't we have a choice? Some subjects are the basis of our degree but Mass Media has so much to give out, We should have more options while choosing the subject we want to specialize in.

  9. According to me, the education that we are receiving as BMM students is just right. The subjects get more and more relevant every year. They are not merely for us to vomit on to the exam papers. Every subject we have, has it’s own place and importance in the real world. It is upon us to decide how we must apply it. The only thing stopping us from truly grasping the importance is ourselves. We need to show interest in these subjects to allow the creativity to flow. By shoving it aside, we are merely losing out on the interest that builds the creativity which BMM feeds on. In class, we definitely get the opportunity to express our opinions however bizarre they may be. Presentations, movies, group discussions and participation in college festivals give us the opening to directly use these classroom skills in situations close to those found in the real world but with far less pressure, allowing us to inflate our ingenuity.

  10. A brilliant speech by Sir Ken Robinson! It was exactly what was needed. Creativity in education is the need of the hour. We really have to prepare ourselves to be wrong. Once we have overcome the fear of being wrong, only the sky is our limit! As he said, ‘intelligence is diverse, dynamic and distinct’ and ‘we have to rethink the fundamental principles on which we are educating our children’ the realization and application of it would lead us to an epoch in the making. Instead of asking the kids ‘why’ do they prefer something n why don’t they prefer something else, we should question ourselves ‘why not’! At this stage it wouldn’t be appropriate for me to leave academic studies completely since having a degree is very crucial, but it would be great to pursue our interests and hobbies alongside. In fact, R.D. National College itself offers an interdisciplinary Honours Programme. As we think of future goals and as to how would we improvise the education system to accommodate a varied learning process we should not leave out the efforts that have been made and are being made to pave the way for improvement. For example: many schools have now started the grading system and a recent article in the Times of India states that students with percentages as low as a 35 -40% can go to colleges which give practical training in certain fields. As for our BMM education, I think it’s just the way it has to be. It’s perfect and it already includes a lot of creativity. BMM has a perfect blend of subjects as well, some of them are history and political science. While history reveals the past, political science presents the present scenario, and, a fusion of the past and present results in the future blossoming into a beautiful flower.

  11. Awesome speech by mr.ken robinson. He rightly said that creativity is needed in our education system and I agree that we lack creativity in our country’s education. The reason is that still major population does not accept the creative side of the education. Even today for many people the best thing in the world is if his child becomes a doctor or an engineer. Many people force their children to take subjects that their child doesn’t like in an attempt to secure the child’s future. Very few parents actually understand the child’s dreams and support it.
But I also feel that the education system should not turn into an choice based education where you can choose the subjects of your choice, because its not the education system that needs to be changed but it’s the mindset of the people.
I also feel that BMM has a very right curriculum. It gives us a exposure to all fields needed and also we have a reserve of 50 marks for projects that is practical knowledge but its up to the teachers to give us applicable project work that helps us get more exposure. I feel that if the board decides our projects we would not like it.

  12. "People learn from their mistakes". This is one phrase thrown around casually. But this is the bases of creativity. The education system worldwide demands we be "Brilliant" and "intelligent". Who decides what is brilliant. The education system was based on the needs of the industrial revolution. There is a definite need for change. Theoretical knowledge is redundant without creativity. No one wants to do the same things over and over again. We are taught the "smart" subjects in school which will not be useful for us in any way. The belief that grades shows us the actual potential of a child is absolute crap. Everyone is good at something. Our system needs to take that ‘good’ and turn it into a ‘great’. It’s like polishing a rough diamond. Such support will encourage the child to believe that he can achieve his dreams. The examples of Shakespeare and the dancer are perfect as they show us that everyone has potential, our education system just needs to know how to unlock such potential. Subjects like maths and languages are important, but it’s the individual’s choice if they are as important as music or theater for HIM. Society must understand his choice and not scorn upon his selection.
Another point i agree is the inflated education system. Today you need a handful of degrees to get a decent job. And to support family you need a job that pays. And with no incentive for jobs that can showcase creativity, people are forced to sacrifice their creative freedom in order to earn. A lucky few make it big following their dreams, but there are millions who give up on their dream cause they are told “the pay is bad” or "it’s not a man’s job" or "That's not even an actual job". Such pressure 'to achieve something' is killing creativity in us. We are told to study blindly without even understanding anything. The one who remembers better is the eventual winner, even though that person may not understand anything. The education system in place at the moment is a complete failure and needs and urgent upheaval. And the need to teach society the need for creativity.

As for the subjects in BMM:
i think they are a bit narrow but as i choose to do advertising they are good enough. The manner of teaching is more interactive which includes actually using your brain for a change and not just learning like a zombie. The subjects are a perfect mix of a bit of theory and practical’s in two half’s of 50 marks. Theory will teach you stuff but the practical’s are where your creativity is demanded. It shows you your actual potential. I feel that all the subjects of BMM, the marking system and the system of teaching are a step towards advocating creativity. It may not be perfect but it is better than the general system of education in place.

  13. I totally agree with Sir Ken Robinson’s ideology but I don't agree to the statement that schools kill creativity? It’s actually the way of teaching students that has just narrowed the mind of students. Mugging up from huge thick textbooks just to get good grades and pass the year. Actually today's education system is very slightly related to the work we are going to do in the near future. We just study to get that degree in hand and to acquire a good paid job. One of the best things said by sir ken Robinson is "creativity is as important as literacy, and we should treat it with the same status ".Talking about creativity like sir ken Robinson said every person in this world is creative we just need to explore it as we grow up .it’s also the education system in schools and colleges that kill creative part in every person .As asked in venkat sir’s first class to each and every one ‘why have you taken BMM’? On which more than half of the class answered’ I have a creative mind’ .No doubt about that now, but do they know how creative they are? But instead of discussing all the bad parts about our education system we all should think of ways in which we can improve the system not for us but at least the coming generation of engineers, doctors and journalist.
As for the subjects in BMM:
As of BMM is concern I think it’s a very great course for the people who are interested in the media profession ,but there are some disadvantages to BMM one of them is the number of options that the course offers .one of the most confusing decision in BMM is to take advertising or journalism . on top of it there are six semesters in the span of three years in which each semester has 6 or 7 subjects each and the subjects are different in each semester so we are just educated with a very little knowledge of each subject .for example marketing a very huge subject and we are just taught about the basics of marketing. About changing the degree level education system I think technological advancements are very useful in educating students like online studies and studying through blogs and sites and also using power point presentation for better understanding. Like the initiative collectivity.

  14. Sir Ken Robinson's speech was profoundly stressed towards the lack of creativity in the present education system.Sir Ken is telling us that how the present education system will ruin the creativity in today's children. The very best example related to these video is the movie"3 Idiots"wherein R.Madhavan played the role where he wanted to become a photographer instead he opts for engineering because of his family wanted him to do so..This tells us that the present education system just ruining the creativity in today's children.Another example of the same movie wherein one of the guy even attempt to suicide because of the burden of his studies.Sir Ken says that in today's world the expectations are much higher from the children and that is the reason where children are scared to make mistakes because of pressure. But Sir says that if children doesnt make the mistake then they wont have the level of creativity which they can develop without this kind of pressure.
As malvika said about that she was restricted from going to dance classes thinking the dance couldnt make her career well according to her parents;even i was restricted from pursuing the career on singing but in the later part Malvika though joined dance classes but i din get a chance to join any such class keeping in mind"i am so called Girl"!!so u never know malvika could hav been a renowed dancer and i somwere maybe a renowed singer :);)
This results in loss of creativity and increase the pressure on todays children resulting in the number of suicides
As Vanessa mam asked us about the BMM education system.i would like to say that the education system is not creative friendly yet. It is still taught within the framework of what the Mumbai University thinks of Mass Media. It is still based on grades, not entirely I agree but to a large extent it is. The course needs to be more practical. This is not a degree that promises a good job or any such thing. Which is the sad part.

  15. According to me,Creativity in today’s world is very important as it is hand in gloves with literacy.A person’s creativity should be enhanced,as in today’s industrial world with entire new system of education literacy alone is not sufficient.A person has to be dynamic and fast moving in this comptetive world and has to really improvise on his/her inner creativity.I like what Sir Ken Robinson said about that all schools over the country have a hierarchy of which subjects are more important than others. Math is considered the most important and the arts are at the bottom. He continued saying that what if all schools taught dance as much as they taught math? What a difference education would be if we focused more on the arts than on math and science. What a risk that would be in our educational world. In all the confusion of what to teach students and how to teach students, I just wonder if it will ever be solved? Will what Ken Robinson says ever be put in practice in every school in the country...in the world? Will adults ever put the facts and statistics aside and focus on a whole, well-rounded education that engages children in every area of development? What a risk that would be in education. I think that his talk can be applied in many ways of our lives : we have all enormous capabilities in relying on conformity, common-sense and any form of assessment. We need to develop a more free mind and a holistic approach to any form of knowledge and conception that we are intentionally or not in contact with. Education needs to be progressive, but this cannot be done alone, it needs leadership support,But for this progressive philosophy to be adopted in education in needs support of all stakeholders. we need to think critically about what getting an education means in the 21st century, it's absurd that a college degree should hold so little weight in our world and a masters has become the base level necessary for a good job. Ken Robinson says at the end of his speech, will we ever see our children for the hope that they are? Our children are out future and we have no idea what our future is going to look like. Schools need to start taking risks and educating to the whole student, rather than to just certain parts. And I feel BMM is the perfect course to enhance one’s creativity as it involves many projects and presentations and it is a very creativity-friendly course and all its subjects involves some kind of a personality development and your creative skills are enhanced. The subjects are very relevant and your actual potential is shown in the projects and practicals.

  16. BMM enhances creativity. This course brings practicality in the so-called system. There remains no scope for cheating with subjects like psychology and photography. It is prepared to teach the students the significance of contemporary issues. The focus of this course lies on practical aspect with students expected to submit projects and stage presentations which created innovative thinking and many other qualities in the students.
Picasso once said "All children are born creative, the problem is that they remain creative when they grow up" .This statement made by Ken Robinson inspires parents to see the creative side of a child rather than killing it .One should always follow something what they have passion for, whether its the career or anything else. In todays world parents want their children to either become doctors, engineers or lawyers its the best career option according to them, anything other than this is a strict no no for them.3 idiots is the best example I can give here is because through out that movie we can see that a student has the skill for photography but is forced by his parents to pursue engineering because he may not get a good salary as a photographer, there is fear in their minds whether they will be able to support their family if they follow their creative dreams, where there is fear there is no creativity. Students are creating suicide due to the education pressure. If a child is born with a learning disability, the parent feels they have to be behind the child continuously for their education or else the child will lack confidence. But such children have some other skill at which they maybe masters. I feel that every child is creative in their own way. I like the humorous way in which Mr. Ken Robinson has put forth the idea of creativity being killed in children.
I feel the most powerful way of creating creativity in students is to be a role model. Just by telling them to become creative they don’t become creative, you have to show them how to bring out their creativity. Children's lives, just like those of adults, should be compartmentalized. There should be some sense of balance between the times when children have time for creative exploration, experimentation, and innovation, and the times where choices are restricted, where direct instruction is given, and where children are required to obey rules and conform to social norms. Unfortunately, what happens is that there is usually a lack of balance and life becomes an all or nothing proposition, thus, many children go through childhood learning only about competition, rules, control, and conformity, and little about the joy of exploration, innovation, and discovery as these elements pertain to acts of creation.

  17. THE SPEACH GIVEN BY SIR KEN ROBINSON WAS REALLY GREAT. WHAT HE SAID WAS RIGHT THAT THE SYSTEM OF EDUCATION WHICH WE FOLLOW IN SCHOOL KILLS CREATIVITY BUT I FEEL THAT EDUCATION IS COMPLETELY A DIFFERENT FROM THE CREATIVITY FIELD. IN SCHOOL THE SUBJECTS WHICH WE LEARN IN LOWER GRADE IS VERY BASIC IN LIFE AND I GUESS THAT IS A MUST AND WHEN STUDENTS MOVE IN HIGHER GRADE THEY SHOULD BE GIVEN OPTIONS IN SUBJECTS LIKES MATHS AND SCIENCE AND I GUESS THE EDUCATION SYSTEM HAS KEPT SUCH OPTION FOR THE STUDENTS. REGARDING THE CREATIVITY OF STUDENT I THINK THE EDUCATION SYSYTEM SHOULD START WITH AN OPTIONAL SUBJECT WHERE THEY GET TO SELECT THE CREATIVITY OR TALENT THEY HAVE IN THEM LIKE SINGING,ACTING,DANCE,ETC. BUT THERE ARE CHILDREN WHO ARE SO MUCH TALENTED BUT THEIR TALENT IS NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY AND THEY ARE MADE TO FOUCS ON SUBJECTS LIKES MATHS OR SCIENCE OR MAY BE FORCED TO TAKE MEDICAL OR ENGINEERING IN THEIR FUTURE LIFE. IN TODAY'S WORLD I GUESS 70% OF THE PARENTS WANT THEIR CHILDREN TO GO ACCORDING TO THE SYSTEM WHICH HAS BEEN FOLLOWED SINCE YEARS AND 25% PARENTS KNOW THE VALUE OF THEIR CHILD TALENT AND THE CREATIVE MIND HE HAS AND THE REST 5% CHILDREN HAVE TO FIGHT WITH THEIR PARENTS TO CHOOSE WHAT THEY LOVE TO DO EG-IF A CHILD WANTS TO BE AN ACTOR BUT HIS PARENTS FORCE HIM TO HANDLE THE FAMILY BUSINESS OR TAKE MEDICAL OR ENGINEERING. WHICH I GUESS IS COMPLETELY WRONG AND THE STUDENTS SHOULD BE GIVEN THE FREEDOM TO SELECT FIELDS WHICH THEY ARE INTERESTED IN. TO THE END I WOULD SAY THAT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS PERFECT JUST THAT THEY SHOULD CHANGE IN SOME AREAS WHERE THEY GIVE EQUAL IMPORTANCE TO STUDIES AS WELL AS THE CREATIVE TALENT THE STUDENTS HAVE.

  18. I totally agree and identify with what this man has tried to tell everyone through his wise words. I myself was forced into the science field, because the BMM field or the arts field is considered as-People who don’t get in anywhere else or do not know what to do pursue such courses, which is not at all true. Education does not mean studying fat books and vomiting it out on your exam papers, Education is when you have full knowledge about a topic, ANY TOPIC OR SUBJECT. Be it dancing, singing, acting, medicine or accounting. It hardly matters as long as you are good at what you are doing. You become a doctor but a bad one is of no use. To become a grass cutter but a good one does matter. Doing things just for the sake of doing it will not get you far. Everything in this world has some kind of creativity involved. Be it anything. A really nice effort by Sir Ken Robinson to put this across the masses. A must watch for every Indian parent especially.

  19. WELL THE EDUCATION WHICH WE ARE RECIVING RIGHT NOW OF BMM DOES ENCOURAGES CREATIVITY AND IT SHARPEN THE SKILLS OF STUDENTS IN DIFFERENT AREAS.WELL THE SUBJECT WHICH WE HAVE LEARNED AND LEARNING ARE QUITE INTERESTING AND PROVIDES WITH GOOD KNOWLEDGE BUT I GUESS SOME WHERE DOWN THE LINE THERE ARE SUBJECTS LIKE ECONOMICS WHICH SHOULDNT BE THERE(MY POINT OF VIEW) AND SOME NEW SUBJECTS WHICH GIVES INFORMATION ON DIRECTIONS SHOULD BE INTRODUCED. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO CHANGE THE THE 3RD YEAR OPTIONS WE HAVE. GIVING ONLY 2 OPTIONS MAKES STUDENT MORE CONFUSING AND CANNOT DECIDED WHICH ONE TO CHOOSE.OPTIONS LIKE FILM DIRECTION,EVENT MANGEMENT,ETC SHOULD ALSO BE INTRODUCED IN THE 3RD YEAR...

  20. “Creatively is as important as literacy and we should treat it with the same status” by Sir Ken Robinson the above quote describes the video on a whole that creativity should also be given importance because it’s high time that one realizes the need to be themselves, unique and importantly not to loose the artist in themselves .it’s time for the rat race to end and the thinking of a common man that engineers and doctors are only the important degree’s .
Everything has its importance in nature and if creativity’s wasn’t important then it wouldn’t have been exiting anymore. everybody would be a robot …I believe every smallest of smallest thing has a creativity and one discovers on the process of learning .if this process of learning is only so difficult where you have half of the subject which don’t interest you not even for 1 %why just be one other looser in crowd if you can be the best .I even feel money decided everything and most important our careers people jump to the field where one is paid more than our satisfaction to the work we doo….
And where as bmm is a concern
    Yes it is creative
    And
    No it is not
Yes! Because it depends the way you study how innovatively you give your presentations and the method being used to tech
This course gives you liberty to learn and explore things more than any other courses.
Creativity and fun are the important factors for this course.
No! Because bmm is like JACK OF ALL BUT MASTER’S OF NONE
And secondly if you don’t follow the yes part
We can make BMM BETTER by giving options for the subject
for eg a student loves science and he is a good writer .we can have similar subject for the student. Where he can be a writer and a engineer AS WELL

  21. Hey Guys!!!
What a topic to discuss on... “Do schools kill creativity????”
How many of us reading this actually know what does creativity mean?
Creativity means: The use of the imagination or original ideas. But since the time we understand what life is and how are we supposed to live it, the only thing spoon fed to us is that we have to take up a subject/field in which our parents/teachers think we might excel. No one ever bothers to ask the child in what he wants to do. Right from the start we are expected to be amongst the toppers or else it is said that 'we are dumb.' We are kind of you can say not eligible/ fit for a good social life. Why go far off. I'll give you a classic example of a bollywood film. I'm sure movies are a medium where each and every individual connects to it from heart. In the movie "Taare Zameen Par," the kid is a genius whereas art is concerned but due to a sickness is unable to grasp the regular curricular work. In this scenario, wherein he needs maximum family support, he is neglected and compared to his elder brother where the brother is absolutely normal and can lead a normal life. I'm sure all of you might be thinking that this not a discussion about being normal or not. But all i'm trying to say that the kid was normal for his parents until of course his teacher finds out, he is being completely 'tortured' every single day of his life. The consequences: that the child kills his liking for art as well. He was lucky to have a teacher like Aamir Khan to understand him and make him realize his dreams once again, but all are not lucky. Many people after having immense talent can't have the courage to fulfill it as they are scared either of their parents/teachers/society. Why and from where does this fear crop up? Why can't creativity be given importance? I fell more than producing book worms, education system should focus more on creativity and 'natural talent.' Another example here we can quote is of '3 Idiots.' Again here we see that how all the three idiots are different from one another. Aamir khan who is interested in engineering realizes his goals and liking and works towards it, whereas R. Madhvan on the other hand is interested in photography and yet cannot overcome the fear of his parents and continues to take up engineering with pathetic scores. How many more people are gonna suffer like this? And why? Do we have an answer? Sir Ken Robinson has depicted this problem of our society in a very impressive and funny way. Hope this helps each and every one of us to understand creativity in a much better way. And creativity is given importance.

  22. THE SPEECH BY SIR KEN ROBINSON WAS VERY VALUABLE HE SAID VERY TRUE AND WISE THING THAT CREATIVITY FROM EDUCATION HAVE BEEN VANISHING. NOW-A-DAYS CREATIVITY IS BEING INCULCATED IN EDUCATION. BEFORE CHILDREN WERE FORCED TO DO WHAT THEY DIDN'T WANT TO, FOR EXAMPLE HE SAID "NOW-A-DAYS SUBJECTS IN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM IS JUST MATHS,SCIENCE & HISTORY NO SUBJECTS LIKE DANCE & MUSIC". BUT PEOPLE NOW-A-DAYS ARE OPEN MINDED AT LEAST WATCHING SUICIDE RATES AND 3 IDIOTS,THEY REALLY THINK THAT CHILDREN SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS. BUT THEN ALSO EVEN THOUGH PARENTS TEACH THEIR CHILDREN TO FACE CHALLENGES,THEY KIND OF BECOME SCARED TO APPROACH THINGS TO OTHER WITH FEAR THAT THEY MIGHT BE WRONG, SO THEY FEEL SAFE RATHER NOT APPROACHING THEM. AS MOST OF THE PEOPLE SAID IN PREVIOUS COMMENTS THAT PEOPLE CHANCE SHOW THEIR TALENTS PUBLICLY WHICH IS SIGN OF PROGRESS. THE CHANGES WE CAN SEE IN FRONT OF OURSELVES LIKE INVENTION OF BMM COURSE,ACTING SCHOOLS,DANCE ACADEMIES,MUSIC STUDIOS,ETC. THEY ARE SOME EXAMPLES OF PROGRESS. BEFORE CHILDREN WERE FORCED TO DO MEDICAL AND ENGINEERING BECAUSE PARENTS WANTED THEM TO GAIN RESPECT AND MONEY OUT OF IT BEFORE THESE WERE THE PEOPLE WHO WERE RESPECTED NOT MUSICIANS OR DANCERS IT WAS SOCIETY WHO WAS WRONG NOT PARENTS. SIR KEN ROBINSON TRIED TO CONVEY THAT SOCIETY NEEDS TO CHANGE THEIR THINKING AND BELIEFS WHICH HAPPENING AND BECAUSE OF WHICH MANY ORIGINAL IDEAS ARE EVOLVING FROM THE YOUNG MINDS.HE CONVEYED HIS MESSAGE CLEARLY AND HUMOROUSLY

  23. I think even in BMM we need to get more creativity rather than studying in some subjects…
BMM is about creativity but I think instead of mugging up stuff for exams and writing them they should even ask some question where we can write what we think... I am not denying that BMM is not creative but it can be more enhanced where every individual can show their talent/interest.
We can get some more individual projects instead of a group project like for a documentary film or so, so that every person can show what their point of view is. I fell that this helps in grooming an individual completely rather than making him an expert in a field where his potential lies. Only new challenges can bring out the best in you in every aspect!!

  24. I second everyone who says that the education we are receiving doing BMM is right. But I also feel that BMM leaves us with allot of options, which again is our choice whether to get confused or no. If we have a particular mindset and goal regarding our career and future, there is nothing which can stop us from achieving it. It is giving us the grounds to show our creativity and knowledge as well and also teaching us to be creative. Talking about Sir Ken Robinson's speech, it was a very well framed speech with perfect tinge of humor. However, I do not support whatever he stated completely. Coming back to creativity, I do not feel it is not been given importance in today's world or by the education system. After all, BMM is a subject brought forth by today's education system. I agree creativity is an important aspect, but knowledge is as well. This used to happen before that children had to give up on their dreams in order to live up to their parents expectations, forcefully or by choice. It might be happening with many students now as well, but it is still a rare case in the present generation. Now a days parents also understand the importance of letting their child do whatever he or she wants to do, and they would do anything to make them achieve it. Today we see schools and colleges organizing workshops, hobby classes, etc. only because they understand the importance of creativity. Take an example of our own college. Recently we received a notice from the principal regarding the drama workshop. All this is to support our creativity. But knowledge has its own vital importance which we by now should realize. There are people who underestimate creativity, but it is us who has to make a choice. It is us who needs to understand that knowledge and creativity walk hand in hand.

  25. As Sir Ken Robinson has said in his speech, even i agree to the fact that school kills creativity of children. Todays education system does not permit a child to use his talents rather it makes him more mechanical. To further add to his woes even todays parents beleive in ensuring high score in subjeects like maths nd science which will ensure a bright future for their children. The childs other interests are always given second priority nd generally considerd as a hobby which they do not believe in pursuing as a career. As Sir Ken Robinson rightly said that creativity is equally importnt as literacy and hence even i beleive that a hobby should befollowed with full passion and can be considered as a career if one wants to. This will inspire them more to be themselves and would also help them to acheive success at the highest level. Also movies like '3 idiots' and books like '5 point someone' by Chetan Bhagat reinforce the same point that life is not all about studyng widout passion but it is acheivng ur goal and doin things that you are best at. They also ring a chord amongst the youngsters. Today there is a large variety of choices available for the youth and our generation can not only voice out their opinions but they are also confident and are willing to take chances with their future.

I beleive BMM today offers a varriety of subjects for the students. But i think the course teaches us only the basics of the subject. I feel it can be made more meaningfull if the course offers us a chance to work as interns with different companies and explore various oppourtunites.

  26. We cannot blame the education system for not being able to live up to our creativity, it is the mindset and thinking of the people round us which should be blamed and changed. Talking about making BMM better keeping creativity in mind, I would appreciate it if it could be made better, but I anyhow like it the way it is as well. We all know in BMM we split 100 marks of every subject into 50 marks of practical work and 50 marks of theory. So we do have 50 marks to show our talent and creativity, which we should make use of.

  29. I just loved the speech given by sir ken robinson. and i strongly agree with him. the point which says creativity must be treated as literacy. In todays world being creative is a big thing and it should be respected. Earlier people dint give lot of prefrence to dance singing and other activities. But now there are so mny oppourtuiniteis coming up. Dancing singing has now become a profession. But along with this there are parents who still think that taking up subjects like maths and science would give their children a bright future. parents want their children to be doctors and engineers, whci is not all that easy. Parents must understand that earning a good salary is not the only thing in their childs life. Parents at times dont understand the stress they put upon their children because of which there are so many suicide cases in India. Movies like '3 idiots' are made to make d masses understand that parents must not force their children and for the children, living their passion shoud be their life. If one does what he likes doing only then would he enjoy living. Interests like art, drwaing, singing can be taken as a career and noone should have a problm with it!

  30. A wonderful speech by sir ken Robinson..i somehow agree to him that creativity now is as important in education as literacy and we should treat it with same status. The best speech I have ever heard on education. Being the truth of what he says and implementing it in school is a different thing. School systems are a way to educate people for control.I believe, it all depends on a particular student what he wants to do or become in his life, I disagree that why maths and languages are given so much importance and why not dance and drama, because according to me, maths and languages are a must in ones life for their survival in some way or the other but dance and drama are optional and is given enough importance nowadays,if you feel dance is more important then you can surely join the dance school later on, where they will surely not teach you maths. But then again in our world today, if you fail all of your classes, regardless of the fact that you can paint a masterpiece work of art, you are not intelligent because you couldn’t even pass your school.I believe that in our class yes it is possible that a student who fails is more talented than the student who score good marks, may be he is not that good in those subjects, but our education system doesn't agree to it which discourages that student in other fields as well.I totally agree with his statement that degrees aren't worth anything because nowadays if u have a degree that doesn't give you a guarantee that u have a job this is where he proves that creativity is as important as literacy in today's education system.Totally agree to his 3 things about intelligence.creativity defined by him"is a process of having original ideas that have value" but our education system doesn't believe in original ideas, the current education system requires every single student to submit the same answer, and allows no room for difference. So according to me, education system still needs a few changes.

  32. SIR KEN ROBINSON spoke about creativity and education, every single word in his speech was inspirational. I will call it inspirational as he has a different perception for things, for example, in the above video, SIR KEN ROBINSON spoke about Shakespeare being a child and attending English class...this is indeed very true, as they say ‘every king was a crying baby once’ , even Shakespeare would have attended English class, but then eventually it is what you do with the knowledge you have, Passing a film school is a different thing and implying your knowledge of it is another, how creative can u be, are you ready to accept that you are wrong ?
For a person to accept that he is wrong is very difficult, like every child is BORN with Creativity, Every child is also born with the capability to Accept his Fault, which gradually fades off because of our Ego.

SIR KEN ROBINSON’S concept of introducing Dance as a compulsory subject like maths which requires daily practice is very innovative...As in life, Dance would help us earn our living just like maths. Moreover if we have compulsory subject as ‘ART’ right from our schooling days, the Creativity that every child is born with stays with him throughout his educational period. Helping him to be a better and a creative learner.

  33. A wonderful speech by SIR KEN ROBINSON.I hope our education format changes the way he expressed.I think we all agree with him and he is right when he spoke about creativity and innovations. The Indian government should change the way they think and deal with education very much seriously. There must be some way that they should come out with for the betterment of our future India.Education should be made valuable and interesting so that the students don't loose their interest in studies and get confused what they really aim for.Whatever he said about creativity has a strong point. It is the childhood where someone can get trained for its future.Talking about other curricular activities, its the talent which can decide the individual. If a person is not interested in studies, its right on his path to go where he finds interest. He can join dancing, singing, drama and athletic classes.I support him and i really like the way he thinks.

  34. Creativity is doing things originally using your past experiences in a novel manner . To think out of the box, one actually enters a bigger box so even if someone enjoys to study the boring theories is not actually wrong as long as they are able to apply the knowledge in their lives and are happy performing what they really want to. The idea here is to be open to the passion in you and as Sir Ken Robinson very rightly said to stop being afraid of being wrong because being wrong is what increases you chances to be more original and discover something new.
Also , I agree it’s time to make changes in our educational system but not everything being taught to us is useless and baseless even though a lot of the theory matter is. Subjects like history maybe boring as a lot of us would agree but what it gives us is the knowledge of the past and the sense to make a better present and a future. But at the same time yes we should have dance , drawing , music etc. being taught as subjects. It’s not only time to change the educational system but also the mindsets. As Sir Ken Robinson said that the hierarchy of preference is commerce then humanities and then arts. This is because of the mindsets of people.
BMM as a course does encourage creativity and gives a lot of scope for it as well. But why should BMM be the only course embracing this thought ?

  35. I think the education that we are receiving is right there is no need to change. It is also helping in creativity, mainly in the second year the subject creative writing has been the most creative and interesting one so far and if i would have to make BMM more creativity friendly i would like to have more practical work then the theory part and even i would like to have more career options.

  36. Sir Ken Robinson is a great speaker his speech also pointed towards creativity with studies creativity helps to increase the knowledge of a person only bookish knowledge is never enough for anyone everyone should have awareness about the outside world too if you would have only bookish knowledge then i don't think one could be "THE BEST" in a particular field he/she might be good but not "THE BEST" and even i do think that when someone is interested in a particular field should pursue that field only and i think that the parents also do need to understand that what their child is interested in many parents would like their child to become a doctor but what if the child wants to be a singer, choreographer etc. he/she might get into medical field but when there will be no interest then i don't think he/she would be good in that thing and will never succeed. I am glad that i am able to do what i wanted to and i guess this speech should be shown to the parents who do not allow their child to do what they like.

  37. I agree to what Sir Ken Robinson just said. Now-a-days schools have become an obstacle and the students are always

in a huge pressure. The dreams of a child are hampered right from the time he's born. Some of the parents decide

their child's future at the beginning itself and the child is left with nothing to do but only go with parents.
Schools on the other hand creates an added burden. The child is made to study all those subject which may have no

practical applications ahead. This is the main reason why student loose interest in studies. Schools never bother

about a child's interest but are concerned about their subjects. There should be some schools which take the

responsibility of a child and make him do what he is capable of doing it.There should not be any driving force

regarding his future. For eg: if a child scores good at the SSC level and his keen interest is into fashion designing,

what if he ends up taking science or commerce?? he won't succeed at all. To live life money is not important. Once

your grown old, what next??? Nobody will ask about your job.Even if a person works after retirement then only we

can say that he has lived his life because to continue working u need that creativity which had come at the early

age as Sir Robinson uses a quote from Picasso who once said "All children are born artists. The problem is to

remain an artist as we grow up". The education here is just meant for the sake of getting a degree and making them

hung over the wall but at the end of everything what a person has learnt is a big question mark. So we need to bring

this change and make sure that such things should not happen anymore. The dreams of a child must be rewarded.

  38. The speech given by Sir Ken Robinson is really awesome. His absolutely correct that creativity is as important in education as literacy and we should treat it with same status.Today people fear that what if they are proven wrong in front of others after creating something original???? and thats the reason why people fail. But creativity means the process of having original ideas and that comes out of different disciplinary ways of interaction.
Parents/society/school their all mentality goes as a child can progress only if he is a doctor/engineer/ca etc.No one feels necessary t ask that what the child wants to do??? i mean this is ridiculous.I have a friend who was very good at drawing and wanted to be professional painter but his family insisted to take up engineering.Today hes sitting at home with broken confidence and doing nothing. What if his parents would have allowed him than may be he would have achieved something in his life.Itz high time now when people need to understand the importance of creativity in their life.
I liked his explanation of ‘intelligence is diverse, dynamic and distinct’ and i totally agree to it.
It is a must watch videos for all.
As for BMM subjects yes creativity could be possible by more of individual and group projects....

  39. The speech given by sir ken robinson is an eye opener for all those people who put down creativity. Every person has the capacity to be creative. Each person is talented in some way or the other but due to the pressure from society, the creativity is crushed. The education system is very basic and it’s not like it does not have creative subjects like dance, drama or art but these subjects have not been given enough value and thus as children grow up their original ideas are not put forward because they are so afraid of taking the wrong step. The society’s perception towards creativity is negative, maybe not entirely but very few parents let their child do what they want, even if the child is interested in art and just cannot study, and they still put pressure on him to become something they want him to be not what he wants to be. According to Sir ken robinson creativity is as important as literacy and everyone has agreed with it because if new creative ideas wont be put forward then this world and this generation is not going to progress. The message which he is trying to give is that education is not only theory subjects like mathematics, science, history, etc. education can also be dance, education can also be painting. It is said that how much ever knowledge you gain the better it is for u, and according to me dance and art is a great form of knowledge. Even then changes are occurring where creative fields are concerned; degrees for music, art and dance are there, but how many people actually go for these degrees? It is obvious that we need doctors, engineers and businessmen, but we also need creative people, without creative people the world would be incomplete. Edward de bono said that “Creativity is a great motivator because it makes people interested in what they are doing. Creativity gives hope that there can be a worthwhile idea. Creativity gives the possibility of some sort of achievement to everyone. Creativity makes life more fun and more interesting”. All I can say is the society has forgotten its true goal of education. Education is supposed to make people capable of doing new things and not the same thing which has been taught for so many years.
As for the BMM subjects, I would say the subjects are relevant, except history as we have studied the same thing before in school. The course helps us to remove our ideas from the brain into the piece of paper or in the form of a movie. BMM can become more creative friendly if there are more workshops and there should be some discussion lectures where people can only put forward their ideas instead of learning something new or which we already know.

  41. I completely agree to what Sir Kent Robinson has to say. In today’s
world, the person’s intelligence is judged by how well has he scored in
his exams, and how far has he studied.n But honestly speaking, there
is no checklist or method to determine how intelligent the person is.
Intelligence of a man should not be regarded only from the reference
of his grades and scores, but what actually the person is good at,
which indeed could be things apart from books!
We need to change the way students are taught things. With so many
fields of education diverse interest, people need to change the way
    students are taught!
Things to quote here: “Creativity is as important as literacy in
education”. These words hit the target perfectly! Sadly, “teaching”
has become such cliché now that it means a 7 to 1 job and make students just ‘learn’ things from the book. The only way of confirming
that the student knows the answers to it is EXAMS,which just ‘categorizes’ student according to the marks he has got. Which is completely wrong. What if the person is good in something else?
If we talk about creativity, that person might be excellent in something else like Art! Music! Writing! The world has so many options to choose from! Hence i feel, if teaching can be creative, the same thing can be taught in a better way.
One always has to appraise the student for what he has done, and should be given a chance to revise his mistakes. If new creative ideas wont be put forward then this world and this generation is not going to progress.

Talking about BMM, it gives a chance for us to do what we like, and to do it OUR OWN WAY!
BMM helps an idea in our mind, to be transformed into a piece of art like a Book, Movie, or Art.
It can be only made better if people are made to be think out of the box. Currently, we are using the same creativity compared to 5 years back because of tight margins. Alot of things have come up over the years. But what we have now, is also pretty awesome, but a litter better wouldn't harm.
BMM offers us a chance to use our mind the own way. I just wish we are given more of field works and internships, so that it realizes us in the practical aspect too!

  43. One thing that bothered me was the fact that I noted a few points on my notepad and saved it as 'CW assignment' .This was the result of severe syrups of education .I believe , when Sir Robinson said we need to adopt new conception of human ecology he meant that the term Education needs a make over. I personally believe that schools or the education system that we have been following with minor evolution is the basic reason why the generation has lost its thinking process . We still follow the education method that was necessary in the early nineteenth century for the economic and social development then . Industrial education was the top priority back then as infrastructure in Europe was awaiting a massive make-over . But today , on this date , we need to expand our horizons and start with the following concepts .
a)global education , by which I mean the talent not the degree of performance should be recognized .
b)social education . Which involves , Complete awareness of the social development rather than self development .
Human beings have always been a potential threat for the planet.
We have unfortunately become a selfish human race who look upon their bodies for transport for their heads; which unfortunately is progressing to meet the shallow needs of industrialism and produce university professors.
Sir Robinson fails to recognize the fact that certain 'Third world countries' still HAVE to rely of the primitive method of education as , the race still believes in cheap out sourcing.
To bring about a change , I believe ,agility and adaptability, initiative and entrepreneurship,
Effective communication, curiosity and imagination should be Imposed in modern schools .
